Meet kit Design Award 2008 winner Erin Morris…
Earlier this year, Kit Cosmetics put the call out to design students for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to design product packaging for Kit ’s new limit edition product range. In it's inaugural year, the Kit Design Award 2008 garnered over 100 entries from design students around Australia (and further abroad). We sat down with our winner, Erin Morris (currently studying her Bachelor of Design – Communication Design (Honours) at RMIT University), to find out the ideas behind her gorgeous award-winning design, her fave kit products, and what her future plans are in design.
kit: Who are you?
Erin: A happy go lucky kind of girl living in Melbourne, studying design, having fun and always trying to be brave and give new things a go.
kit: What do you enjoy about design?
Erin: Design is way to communicate with people. I enjoy design as I like communicating and making beautiful things, whether that be a crisply made bed or a perfect illustration. I guess what I really enjoy is the challenge that meeting a client’s needs presents. The process of understanding something new and generating a creative solution for the communication need.
kit: How did you come up with your concept for the competition?
Erin: I have had an interest in Kit for a while now so luckily I had a pretty good understanding of the eclectic and fun nature of the brand. I wanted to represent the fun and young at heart element of Kit using characters being swept away in a kind of gentle explosion of colour that would take them to the ‘faraway land of colour’.
kit: What inspires you when you are designing?
Erin: As a young designer I am inspired by the work of other studios and artists such as Rob Ryan and even the friends I sit next to at uni. I love Frankie magazine for inspiring illustrations and unique hand crafted buys. I listen to all kinds of music from Frank Sinatra to Cut Copy.
kit: What are your favourite 10 kit products:
Erin: I have to say, I do love the kit nail polish range and if I listed them all it would be more than 10. So I will count nail polish as one, all-inclusive.

kit: What are your goals/plans for the future (within design)?
Erin: I finish my course in late November, so I plan on beginning my career in the marketing/creative media industry then. I will be more than happy in a design, marketing or public relations role. Anything that lets me be creative and interact with other people would be a dream come true.
